UNCAN-Connect is a Horizon Europe project under the EU Mission on Cancer, building a federated infrastructure that enables secure, cross-border cancer research using distributed data.

Core Strategy

Use cases across six cancer types

Integrating pan-European data to solve specific challenges in high-burden and rare cancers.

Paediatric cancer

Using real-world clinical data to better predict cardiovascular and infection risks in children undergoing cancer treatment.

Pancreatic cancer

The aim is early detection of pancreatic cancer through blood-based biomarkers and AI.

Lymphoid malignancies

Improving the care of lymphoma survivors, helping to predict treatment-related cardiotoxicity and tumor relapses using clinical and molecular features.

Lung cancer

These use cases addresses lung cancer risk prediction, early detection, and disease progression through integrated research approaches.

Ovarian cancer

The aim is to understand and improve early detection as well as personalized treatment of ovarian cancer using real-world data from the UNCAN.eu platform.

Prostate cancer

The use case addresses the diagnostic pathway in prostate cancer, specifically biopsy decision after an uncertain MRI finding.

The EU Mission On Cancer

Bridging the Gap in European Cancer Research

UNCAN-Connect is a flagship initiative under the EU Mission on Cancer, designed to address fragmentation in cancer research data across Europe. By establishing a federated data ecosystem, the project enables secure cross-border access to distributed datasets, supporting collaboration among researchers and infrastructures and accelerating high-quality, data-driven cancer research.

Project Duration 60 Months
Total Budget € 30 Million
Consortium 53 Partners
The Network

Key Objectives

UNCAN-Connect aims to strengthen European cancer research by enabling secure cross-border data use, validating it through real clinical use cases, and translating results into sustainable, policy-relevant outcomes.

Federated Data Sovereignty

Cancer data remains under local control while becoming securely discoverable for European research through a decentralized network with strict governance rules.

Technical Interoperability

We build seamless connections between diverse datasets and tools, allowing the UNCAN.eu platform to harmonize data access and analysis across all member nodes.

Trust, Ethics & Compliance

Privacy-by-design is at our core. We ensure full GDPR compliance and alignment with the European Health Data Space to protect patients, providers, and researchers.

Sustainable Impact & Uptake

We translate scientific results into scalable guidelines and policy recommendations, ensuring the long-term growth and sustainability of the European cancer research ecosystem.

Global Outcomes

Measurable
Project Impact

UNCAN-Connect delivers concrete, infrastructure-level impact by enabling secure, federated access to cancer research data across Europe. The project strengthens the foundations for cross-border collaboration, interoperability, and reuse of data in line with the EU Mission on Cancer.

Infrastructure

Federated Data Ecosystem

Establishing a secure, federated framework that enables cross-border discovery and analysis of cancer data while ensuring that sensitive patient data remain under national control and compliant with ethical and legal requirements.

Validation

Enabling Research Through Federated Data Collaboration

Supporting cancer research use cases by providing access to distributed datasets and analytical tools, illustrating how cross-border data collaboration can generate evidence while keeping data secure.

Policy & Coordination

Evidence for Scalable Collaboration

Generating practical evidence, best practices, and technical insights to inform future EU-level initiatives on cancer data sharing, interoperability, and federated research infrastructures under the EU Mission on Cancer.

Our Collaborative Network
